Riding on FIFA World Cup, JioCinema claims top slot among 'most downloaded free apps'

JioCinema has become the No. 1 downloaded free app across Android and iOS App Stores on the back of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The app, available for Jio, Vi, Airtel, and BSNL subscribers, has been sitting on top of free apps in India across all categories since the start of the FIFA World Cup on November 20.

According to App Annie, a tool for app analytics, JioCinema has garnered one-third (29%) of total app downloads in the Entertainment Category in November 2022.

The App Annie further states that JioCinema is the fastest-growing app across all categories in November 2022 versus October 2022.

The app's rapid rise is attributed to the ever-increasing preference of consumers to watch the action on smartphones and connected TVs in India.

64 matches are being live streaming in 4K in multiple language feeds, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali on JioCinema.

To supplement the no-subscription offering to the most-watched football event, JioCinema enhanced viewers' live experience with Hype Mode.

The Hype Mode empowers fans with unique offerings at their fingertips during a live match, including a multi-cam view of the match, trivia and stats in real-time, and Time Wheel that allows viewers to relive an unforgettable moment from the match.

However, many users complained at the beginning of the FIFA World Cup about the disturbances in viewing experiences on the App.

The 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup is mostly seeing matches played in India primetime. Group-stage primetime matches include key clashes like France vs Denmark, England vs Iran, Portugal vs Ghana, Brazil vs Switzerland, and Croatia vs Belgium.

Viacom18 won the rights to FIFA Worldcup in September 2021. The world cup is being broadcasted on Viacom18’s sports channel Sports18 and digitally streamed on JioCinema.

A few months ago, Viacom18 decided to shift all sports properties from VOOT to JioCinema with the intention to make the JioCinema app the place to stream live sports.

Viacom18 Media recently announced a strategic investment from Bodhi Tree Systems. Former 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch, and India’s media doyen Uday Shankar established Bodhi Tree Systems in 2021.

Murdoch comes with more than two decades of global leadership in the media and technology industries. Shankar, who served as President of Walt Disney Asia Pacific, built the media and entertainment company and streaming service in India.
