Google gives users more power to personalise the ads they view

Google has launched ‘My Ad Center’ for users to help control the kinds of ads they want to see across Google on Search, YouTube and Discover. Through this centre, one can block sensitive ads and learn more about the information used to personalise the ad experience.

Jerry Dischler, Vice President, General Manager, Ads, said, “When you’re signed into Google, you can access My Ad Center directly from ads on Search, YouTube and Discover, and choose to see more of the brands and topics you like and less of the ones you don’t. You will never have to spend time searching for the right control or decoding how your information is used. Instead, you can manage your ad preferences without interrupting what you’re doing online.”

Explaining with an example, he said, “Imagine you spent months researching your latest beach trip, and now that you're back, you don’t want to see vacation ads. With My Ad Center, you can just tap on the three-dot menu next to a vacation ad and choose to see fewer of those types of ads. You can also choose to see ads about things that you care about, like deals for sneakers or holiday gifts for your loved ones.”

In My Ad Center, one can easily control whether or not Google will show personalised ads. One can turn on or off personalised ads on Google services at any time.

When personalised ads are turned on, the ads would become more relevant because then one’s info will be used to help find ads for products and brands that interest the person.

Although, when you turn off personalised ads, Google will not use the info or activity saved to the Google account. Instead, the ads one will see be contextual – that is, they will be based on general factors like the time of day or the topic of the video, website, or app someone viewing.

With My Ad Center, one can customise ads by choosing the topics and brands that he/she likes to get more or fewer ads about. Like this, one is influencing how Google determines what ads to show.

To personalise and block ads, one will have to open My Ad Center directly on the ads on some Google services, like Search and YouTube, by selecting the ‘More’ menu.
