Citing security threat, Centre to ban 54 Chinese apps

These apps belong to large Chinese tech firms like Alibaba and Tencent

The Indian government is set to ban 54 Chinese apps that pose a security threat to the country. According to media reports, these apps belong to large tech groups from China like Alibaba and Tencent.

The apps that are set to be banned include, Sweet Selfie HD, Beauty Camera - Selfie Camera, Equalizer & Bass Booster, CamCard for SalesForce Ent, Isoland 2: Ashes of Time Lite, Viva Video Editor, Tencent Xriver, Onmyoji Chess, Onmyoji Arena, AppLock, Dual Space Lite.

In the backdrop of border tensions between India and China, the Indian Government had first banned 59 Chinese apps, including the short-form video platform Tik Tok, in June 2020.

The majority of the apps banned in the June 29 order were red-flagged by intelligence agencies over concerns that they were collecting user data and possibly also sending them "outside".

This was followed by another crackdown on 118 Chinese apps in September 2020.
