According to the third quarter data of Indian readership survey, the top English dailies recorded degrowth in their average issue readership numbers in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata while Chennai witnessed growth.
The Times of India retained its leadership in Mumbai and Chennai markets. Hindustan Times and The Telegraph were number one in Delhi and Kolkata markets.
All the newspapers except The Telegraph in Kolkata witnessed growth in their total readership (TR).
The financial capital of India witnessed a drop in AIR of the top two English dailies.
The Times of India continued to rule the market with an AIR of 12,92,000 in the latest round of IRS. The daily had an AIR of 13,17,000 in Q2 of 2019.
Hindustan Times remained the second-largest read English daily with an AIR of 8,59,000 in Q3 2019, as compared to 8,69,000 in the previous round of the survey.
Both the dailies recorded growth in their total readership (one month recall). TOI had a TR of 27,76,000 in the latest survey, up 5.75% from 26,25,000 in IRS 2019 Q2.
HT’s TR grew by 8.65% to reach 18,84,000 in IRS 2019 Q3 from 17,34,000 in the previous survey.
Hindustan Times continued to rule Delhi market with an AIR of 10,76,000 in IRS 2019 Q3, down 3.4% from 11,14,000 in the previous survey.
At No. 2, The Times of India too lost readership by 3.1% and recorded an AIR of 9,28,000 in the latest round of the survey. TOI had 9,58,000 average issue readers in Q2.
However, TOI strengthened its lead margin over HT in terms of total readership. TOI recorded a TR of 22,06,000 in Q3, up 7.2% from 20,58,000 in the previous survey.
HT’s TR stood at 21,14,000 in the latest survey, up 2.9% from 20,54,000 in Q2.
TOI retained its lead in the Chennai market with an AIR of 2,79,000, up 5.3% from 2,65,000 in the previous quarter. The Hindu was at No. 2 with an AIR of 2,67,000 in Q3, up 6.4% from 2,51,000 in the previous survey.
Like Delhi market, Chennai too witnessed the two dailies swapping positions in terms of TR. The Hindu continued to have a better recall in a month than TOI and retained the No. 1 spot with a TR of 8,98,000, up 11.8% from 8,03,000 in the previous survey.
TOI’s TR stood at 8,46,000 in Q3, up 13.9% from 7,43,000 in Q2.
The Telegraph led the Kolkata market with an AIR of 3,24,000 in IRS 2019 Q3, down 6.1% from 3,45,000 in the previous survey.
TOI remained the second English daily with an AIR of 3,04,000 in the latest round of the survey, down 5.9% from 3,23,000 in Q2.
The Telegraph witnessed a 3.1% drop in TR as it had a total readership of 6,91,000 in Q3, as compared with 7,13,000 in the previous survey.
TOI’s TR stood at 6,43,000 in Q3, up 1.7% from 6,32,000 in Q2.
