Zomato plays on debate over right pronunciation of company name in its new ad

The debate around the right pronunciation is truly an everlasting one in India, especially when it comes to names of companies, as people tend to create their own personalised versions and some of them end up gaining popularity.

The online food and grocery delivery platform, Zomato, in its latest ad touches upon the same issue, and that too a personal one, as the public has resorted to pronouncing the company’s name either ZoMaito or ZoMaato.

The two-minute ad film showcases multiple people from all walks of life- kids, youngsters or even the elderly, debate on whether the right way of pronouncing Zomato is - ZoMaito or ZoMaato.

ZoMaato vs ZoMaito ad campaign-

The ad opens with a family which is waiting to receive guests at their home and have ordered food from the platform as ‘they always deliver on time’. Soon, the family gets into a heated argument, wherein the participants split into two teams; while one side calls the platform ‘ZoMaito’, the other team refers to it as ‘ZoMaato’.

This escalates to such an extent that the members of the family start breaking valuable things such as the vase, chair, table, or even the portrait of a man that’s framed on the wall as the discussion gets heated.

Further, the ad also showcases two news anchors debating on a programme about how to pronounce the name of the company, and two guardians arguing over the same matter.

Cricketers Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth also make a cameo appearance in the advertisement, as they argue in a lift on how to pronounce the company’s name.

The ad further ends on a note that no matter what the name game, the delivery is always on time.

Sharing the ad campaign on Twitter, Deepinder Goyal, Founder and CEO, Zomato, mentioned, “Hard to believe that no one was harmed in the making of this zoMaato ad.”

With this, he left it to the public to decide as to what is the right pronunciation of the company’s name through a poll on Twitter.
