The complaints were received between 2019-2021

The Grievance Against Misleading Advertisements (GAMA), an online portal that was started by the Department of Consumer Affairs, has received over 6,000 complaints against misleading ads in the past three years.

Responding to a query in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said that the online portal has received 6,154 complaints against misleading advertising between 2019-2021.

948 complaints were registered in 2021, 1,790 were registered in 2020 and the highest 3,416 were registered in 2019.

In a written response, the Union Minister said, “All advertisements telecast on private satellite TV channels are regulated in accordance with the Advertising Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issues advisories from time to time to broadcasters for ensuring compliance to the Advertising Code.”

He added that the CCPA (Central Consumer Protection Authority) was established under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 with effect from July 24, 2020, that inter-alia looks into misleading advertisements either suo-moto or on complaints and or on directions from the Central Government.
