Advertising stalwarts, friends, colleagues and admirers, all were in attendance when Ram Sehgal was awarded with the AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award 2018. The ad veteran and the man who started and nurtured a successful ‘start-up agency’ before it was the trend was recognised by the Advertising Agencies Association of India for his irreplaceable contribution to the ad world in an event marked by the attendance of the who’s who of the industry.

It was an evening that took everyone present for a walk down the memory lane as colleagues and friends regaled the audience with funny anecdotes and stories of their time with Sehgal.

Everyone from Ashish Bhasin, Chairman and CEO, South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network Media India and the President of Advertising Agencies Association of India for 2018-2019; Rohit Srivastav, CSO, Contract; Mohit Hira, Co-Founder, Adytude AX; and Ravi Deshpande, Founder, Whyness and former Chairman and CCO, Contract India all had some great memories and moments attached to their time with Sehgal.

While some re-called his Jitendra moment in white pants and white shoes, others remembered the time he had fired a client because the client’s son was misbehaving with two of their women employees. But what everyone agreed on was his infectious energy and his fierce loyalty towards his people.

On stage, Sehgal lived up to his oft-mentioned sense of humour by starting his address with “I have no idea who these people are talking about” – a small nod to all the praise his friends and colleagues had heaped on him.

Sehgal took the audience through his journey of building Contract – a successful off-shoot of JWT (then HTA) – a feat no one else has been able to replicate since. But what the audience was left with was his love for Team Contract still, as he stood there applauding his team on a day that was meant to celebrate his achievements and milestones.
