Blackberry scouts for creative partner to relaunch in India

Even when the Indian phone market is brimming with varieties of smartphones trying to make their own space, Blackberry intends to relaunch in India. Therefore, in an attempt to come back, the Canada-based wireless telecommunications brand Blackberry is looking out for its creative partners in India, confirmed industry sources. The pitch was called last month and is still in the process.

In the past, Blackberry has worked with BBDO, Orchard Advertising, Ogilvy & Mather in India. Currently, nearly 70 per cent of the Indian smartphone market is dominated by Samsung and other Chinese brands such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Motorola and Gionee. BlackBerry was launched in 1999 in North America by Research in Motion (RIM) and was brought into India by Airtel in October 2004 targeting, the high-end corporate sector.

According to news reports, Optiemus Infracom will be manufacturing BlackBerry Android handsets in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. Under the terms of the agreement, BlackBerry will licence its security software and services suite, as well as related brand assets to Optiemus Infracom Ltd. The partner will design, manufacture, sell and promote BlackBerry-branded mobile phones, while providing customer support for devices.
