“Given that we operate at a really high standard, the judging criteria are simple. There are three of them: Is it a brilliant idea? Has it been beautifully executed? Is it relevant to its context?” – Tim Lindsay, CEO, D&AD.

Don’t be fooled by these seemingly simple criteria. Though there are just three, these are criteria by which the D&AD jury filters hundreds of entries that pour in every year to win the coveted ‘Pencils’. These are the same criteria that make D&AD one of the toughest awards to win.

While last year there were six Indians on D&AD’s jury, the 55th D&AD Professional Awards has five Indians as part of its jury. Josy Paul, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, BBDO India, has been named as Jury Foreman for Outdoor Advertising. Last year, R Balki and Prasoon Joshi both held Jury Foreman positions for Film Advertising Crafts and Writing for Advertising, respectively.

The other Indian jurors this year are:

  • Alok Nanda, Creative Director, Alok Nanda & Company (Branding);
  • Bobby Pawar, Chief Creative Officer, Publicis India (Writing for Advertising);
  • Rajiv Rao, National Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai (Creativity for Good);
  • Tista Sen, Senior VP and National Creative Director, J Walter Thompson (Press Advertising).

D&AD takes pride in its judging process and to bring this to people’s attention, the awards has released a short film that illustrates the process that the judges go through each year. Filmed during the inaugural 2016 D&AD Festival, they talked to some of the world's most celebrated creatives about the almost impossible task of choosing the best of the best. The film features D&AD CEO Tim Lindsay as well as some of the biggest names in design and advertising, demystifying what goes on behind the closed doors of the judging room.
