The number of internet users is expected to reach between 450-465 million by June 2017, says a report titled 'Internet in India 2016', jointly published by the internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB. The report also stated that the number of internet users in India was at 432 million in December 2016.

While the growth of internet usage in India is mainly being fuelled by the rural sector, the urban user base has started to show signs of levelling out. According to the report, in urban India, there were estimated 269 million internet users in December 2016, while in rural India, there were 163 million internet users. The report found that urban India has close to 60 per cent internet penetration, reflecting a level of saturation. However, rural India showed only 17 per cent penetration, indicating a large scope for development. The report states that there are potential 750 million users still in rural India who can be reached out to.

The report also found that 51 per cent of urban internet users or 137.19 million use internet daily. On the other hand, 242 million or 90 per cent of the urban internet user's use internet only once a month. In rural India, 48 per cent or around 78 million are daily internet users and around 140 million or 83 per cent of the rural internet user's use internet once a month.

An analysis of 'daily users' in the report revealed that both in urban and rural India, the younger generations are the most prolific users of internet. While the gender ratio is slightly better in urban India, with 40 per cent women using internet as against to 60 per cent men, in rural India only 25 per cent women were internet users as against to 75 per cent men.

Both urban and rural India show almost similar ratios of working and non-working women registering as daily internet users, as compared to the data from a year ago. The rural female internet users are growing at 30 per cent.
