After seven weeks of exciting, enthusiastic and world-class cricketing action, @davidwarner31 inspired Sunrisers Hyderabad (SH) stunned the star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with an eight-run victory to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time. Stadiums buzzed with action as the roar of the crowd around the IPL was loud and clear on Twitter.

The ninth season of IPL smashed a boundary on Twitter as it recorded over 10.6 million tweets throughout the 60 matches in the tournament (Source: iplt20.com). After a successful partnership between IPL and Twitter over the years, the number of fan following @IPL on Twitter shot up by 300 per cent in a span of three years, making it the fastest growing global sports league on the social media site, surpassing biggies such as Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA).

As the excitement for the sport soared on the field, IPL brought fans even closer to the action this year by publishing 32 times more video tweets than 2015. These videos ranged from in-match highlights to net sessions and announcements leading to a 64x growth in video views for IPL over 2015. The final clash between #RCBvSRH was the most tweeted match during IPL 9.

Virat Kohli was the most talked player on Twitter too, MS Dhoni followed. Some of the other most-talked players were AB De Villiers, David Warner and Suresh Raina. Virat Kohli is the most followed player of the IPL with over 10.9 million followers on Twitter.

RCB was the most mentioned team on Twitter followed by Kolkata Knight Riders, SunRisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. Virat Kohli ruled the Twitter chart for top five peak moments from #IPL 9.

How IPL 8 fared on Twitter

There were 375.4 million views of @IPL-related tweets during the live match windows of Season 8. Among the most mentioned players, @ABdevilliers17 was the most talked about batsman on Twitter. The #PurpleCap for most mentioned bowler on Twitter goes to Ashish Nehra of @Chennaiipl. @Harbhajan_Singh who starred for @mipaltan in the final makes up the top three.
