105 pay channels, 36 news channels flouting 12-min ad-cap rule: TRAI

As per data available, B4U Movies tops the non-news pay channels’ list with ad duration of 18.69 minutes per hour. Among the news channels, India TV tops the list with ad duration of 22.66 minutes per hour

traiThe long debate between broadcasters and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) over the 12-minute ad-cap rule will come up for hearing on September 8, 2015 at the Delhi High Court. A week before the hearing, TRAI has published a list of the ad duration per hour on both news and non-news pay TV channels during the peak hours of 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm for the period between March 30, 2015 and June 29, 2015.

As per the list, there 105 non-news pay TV channels and36 news channels that have been found flouting the 12-minute ad-cap rule.

The highest ad duration time per hour for any non-news pay TV channel belongs to B4U Movies (18.69 minutes per hour).

The Sun TV Network has 10 channels among the top 12 non-news pay TV networks that have been found flouting the 12-minute ad-cap rule.

Top 12 non-news pay TV channels with the highest ad duration time per hour during peak hours:

  1. B4U Movies - 18.69 minutes
  2. Udaya Movies - 17.68 minutes
  3. Sun TV - 17.57 minutes
  4. Sun TV HD - 17.57 minutes
  5. Kiran - 17.42 minutes
  6. Udaya Music - 17.31 minutes
  7. Gemini Movies - 16.92 minutes
  8. Sun Music - 16.87 minutes
  9. Sun Music HD - 16.87 minutes
  10. K TV - 16.48 minutes
  11. KTV HD - 16.48 minutes

Among the Hindi GECs, Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) SAB TV posted the maximum ad duration time of 16.22 minutes per hour. It was followed by MSM’s flagship Hindi entertainment channel Sony TV, which had ad duration per hour of 16.08 minutes.

The ad duration per hour during peak hours for other major Hindi GECS are as follows:

Life OK - 14.89 minutes

Star Plus – 14.83 minutes

Star Plus HD – 13.45 minutes

Zee TV – 13.91 minutes

&TV - 13.56 minutes

Colors – 12.86 minutes

Among English movies genre, MSM’s movie channel Sony Pix posted the highest ad duration during peak hours of 15.77 minutes, while in the Hindi movies genre, B4U Movies topped the list with 18.69 minutes per hour.

Among the news channels, India TV tops the list with ad duration of 22.66 minutes per hour. It is followed by Zee group’s Bengali news channel 24 Ghanta (21.73 minutes) and Marathi news channel 24 Taas (21.65 minutes).

The ad duration per hour for other prominent Hindi news channels is as follows:

NDTV India – 21.17 minutes

APB News – 21.10 minutes

Zee News – 19.95 minutes

AajTak - 19.70 minutes

News 24 – 19.46 minutes

IBN 7 – 17.26 minutes

In the English news genre, the list is topped by India Today TV, which recorded ad duration time of 14.96 minutes per hour. It is followed by CNN-IBN with ad duration time of 14.93 minutes per hour. The list doesn’t include Times Now, NDTV 24x7 and NewsX.

In the English business news segment, NDTV Profit tops the list with ad duration time of 16.20 minutes per hour. It is followed by CNBC TV18 with ad duration of 13.49 minutes per hour.

The information is based on the data submitted by the broadcasters. As per information available with TRAI, rest of the news channels are carrying less than 12 minutes of average duration per hour of advertisements (commercial and self promotional) during peak hours (7 pm to 10 pm).
