DD India faces uncertain future as licence nears expiry

dd-indiaDD India is faced with an uncertain future after reports emerged that the state-run broadcaster, that relays news and content to Indians abroad, would go off air from August 31 following the expiry of its satellite licence.

Indiatoday.in quoted a letter from the office of the Additional Director General of Doordarshan that stated that with effect from August 31, DD India would not be available in Hot Bird 13 platform as Deutsche Welle will not be renewing its agreement with Hot Bird.

Deutsche Welle is the German public service broadcaster that has so far been distributing DD India on the Hot Bird 13 satellite.

However, CK Jain, Deputy Director General, Doordarshan India, refuted all reports that the channel was going of air. He said, ““Firstly, I'd like to make it clear that contrary to some reports, the licence expires on September 30 and not August 31. Deutsche Welle is not having the bandwidth to carry the channel. So, perhaps the channel may not be available on the Hot Bird 13 satellite.  However, we are in the process of renewal of the contract and exploring other options too. One thing certain though is that DD India is not going off air.”

The channel was launched on March 14, 1995 as DD International (DD 3). It was renamed as DD World in the year 2000 and finally rebranded as DD India in 2002. DD India is currently available in 146 countries throughout the world.
