General news and business news channels enjoyed a good run in Week 30 of BARC ratings, but a week later Hindi GECs, particularly Star Plus, clawed their way back into the viewership charts.

According to select data (HSM : NCCS All : Individuals : BARC India base - C&S 1Lac+) for Week 31 (August 1- August 7) of BARC rating, Star Plus recovered from the drubbing of last week (367 million) to register a gross viewership of 417 million this week.

Colors didn't lose many TVTs, but stood second with a gross viewership of 341 million.

Zee TV consolidated its third position with a gross viewership of 262 million.

The Nokia SAB Ke Anokhe Awards had taken SAB TV to the fourth spot last week (221 million), but this week SAB TV slipped to the fifth spot behind to Life OK, which got a gross viewership of 235 million. SAB TV garnered a gross viewership of 197 million.

Among the shows, Zee TV's 'Kumkum Bhagya' rose to the top again with 5.9 TVT, while Star Plus' 'Saat Nibhana Saathiya' slipped to No. 2 with 5.8 TVT.

Colors' show 'Sasural Simar Ka' jumped to third spot with 5.1 TVT, while the channel's other show, 'Swaragini', was a notch below with 5 TVT.  Star Plus' 'Yeh Hai Mohabbatein' posted 4.9 TVT to take the fifth spot.

News Channels

Week 30 had seen a huge urge in viewership of both general news and business news channels, as they cashed in on important news events like Yakub Memon's hanging, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's demise, and the Gurdaspur anti-terror operations. Week 31 was sort of a climbdown for the news genre, with the English news genre being the most affected.

As per BARC data for Week 31 for the English news genre (All India : NCCS AB : Males 22+ : Individuals : BARC India base - C&S 1Lac+), Times Now continued to be unchallenged as it posted 599 TVT, but with a decline of 42 pr cent from Week 30 (1038 TVT).

India Today Television's viewership dropped by 50 per cent as it posted 201 TVT in Week 31.

NDTV 24x7's viewership, too, dropped well over 50 per cent (last week 401 TVT) as it garnered 168 TVT in Week 31.

Hindi news channels, too, saw a dip in Week 31, but fared better that the English news channels.

As per select data (HSM : NCCS All : Week 31 : Individuals : BARC India base - C&S 1Lac+) for Hindi news genre, AajTak lost 17,617 TVT, but stayed at No.1 in Week 31 with 42,977 TVT.

India TV and ABP News remained at second and third spots with 39,298 TVT and 38,353 TVT, respectively.

The one genre that was hit hard was the business news genre, especially the English segment.

As per select data (All India : NCCS AB : Males 22+ : Individuals : BARC India base - C&S 1Lac+) for Week 31, CNBC-TV18 continued to top the table with 187 TVT, but that is more than 100 per cent drop from Week 30, where it posted 574 TVT.

Same was the case with ET Now, which who posted 111 TVT as against the 251 TVT it had got in Week 30.

NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime didn't lose much, but remained at a distant third with 50 TVT.

According to select data (HSM : NCCS AB : Males 22+ : Individuals : BARC India base - C&S 1Lac+) for Hindi business news genre in Week 31, CNBC Awaaz climbed from the high of Week 30 (115 TVT) to post 757 TVT this week.

Zee Business lost 110 TVT from Week 30 (790) to post 680 TVT this week.
