The government has appointed IT secretary Ram Sewak Sharma as the new Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to replace Rahul Khullar, who retired on May 14, 2015.

Sharma's appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. He will be in charge for the next three years.

A 1978 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, Sharma is currently working as Secretary in the Department of Electronics & Information Technology. Earlier, he was the Chief Secretary to the government of Jharkhand.

A man of many hats, Sharma has performed various roles. He was Director General and Mission Director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) where he was responsible for overall implementation of the critical project undertaken by the Government of India for providing a unique identification to all citizens.

As Secretary of the IT department, Sharma was responsible for formulating state policies in the IT and e-governance areas. He also oversaw the implementation of various e-governance projects in all the departments of the Jharkhand government.

During his posting with the Government of India, he has worked in the Department of Economic Affairs and has dealt with bilateral and multilateral development agencies like the World Bank, ADB, MIGA and GEF. He played a key role in the financing infrastructure projects in the highways, ports, airports and telecom sectors.

Sharma has a master's degree in mathematics from IIT, Kanpur and another master's in computer science from the University of California (USA).
