A day after Shekhar Gupta put in his papers as Editor-in-Chief of Indian Express, Raj Kamal Jha has been named Chief Editor of the newspaper, while Unni Rajen Shanker will be Editor. Both Jha and Shanker joined the daily in 1996. Jha will report to Viveck Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Express Group.

In an internal mail announcing the appointments today, Goenka said: “Raj's leadership is grounded in his commitment to professional excellence and uncompromising integrity. He brings to the newsroom creativity, clarity and depth, three qualities increasingly rare in our business. This not only inspires his colleagues, it powers them to realize their best potential.”

Goenka further said: “Since they joined in 1996, both have steered change and are, therefore, ideally placed to help guide the paper into the future. That is why, to facilitate a seamless transition, I am proud to repose my faith in them and redesignate them for their new roles.”

Since 1992, Jha has been working full time in newsrooms. He was Assistant Editor (News) at The Statesman, Kolkata, from 1992 to 1994, Senior Associate Editor at India Today, New Delhi (1994-1996), and since 1996 has been with The Indian Express, first as Deputy Editor, then as Executive Editor, Managing Editor and now Editor. Jha is also an acclaimed novelist whose works inhabit the surreal, often dark and violent, space between fiction and fact to explore contemporary India.
