Alok Agrawal, CEO, Zee Media Corporation, has called it a day. Keeping with the new trend of announcing departures through Twitter, Agrawal this morning tweeted that he is on way to joining Reliance Industries, and he also thanked “Team Zee News”. His resignation was announced internally over the weekend to the Zee News team.

On being contacted, Agrarwal declined to specify either his new designation or his new role at Ril. However, industry observers aver that his movement is linked to the major media plans that RIL has with the coming of 4G, which will open up an altogether new dimension in the news and gaming fields.

Agrawal is likely to play a senior role in RIL's Core group that oversees the conglomerate's media initiatives.

What makes Agrawal's move to RIL at this juncture interesting is the fact that a string of senior media hands have recently been roped in by Reliance to beef up its media leadership team. Among them is Gautam Chikarmane, who has joined Reliance as New Media Director. He was previously Business Editor of Hindustan Times. Umesh Upadhayay, a former senior television journalist, has also joined RIL as Media Director. And most recently, BV Rao has joined as News & Communications Director. Rao was till recently Editor of Governance Now.

Agrawal had moved to Zee Media in September 2012 after quitting Cheil India as its Chief Operating Officer – SW Asia. He had moved to Cheil in 2008 from Bates 141 where he was Executive VP heading North India.

An IIT Kanpur (Aeronautical Engineering) and IIM Bangalore alumnus, Agrawal came to advertising in 1993 when he joined Trikaya Grey in Bangalore as Account Manager. He rose to become Account Director when he left Trikaya in 1997 to join Euro RSCG Delhi as Group Account Director. In 1998 he moved to Grey Advertising, Delhi as VP & Head of Client Servicing. In 2003 he moved to Bates 141.
