Keeping up with its promise to bring awe inspiring content for its viewers, Discovery Channel is launching 'Frozen Planet', a series that will take viewers through an unrestrained portrayal of Earth's polar regions. The mega series will be telecast every Monday to Friday at 8 PM, starting May 6, 2013.

Narrated by acclaimed naturalist Sir David Attenborough and featuring the incredible wildlife cinematography, Frozen Planet has taken new technology to the most extreme and remote parts of our planet, capturing groundbreaking imagery above and below the ice. Ambitious and epic in scale, Frozen Planet is the ultimate portrait of the polar regions, capturing all the fragile, jaw-dropping beauty and majestic power of the elements in the greatest wildernesses on Earth.

Rahul Johri, Senior VP and General Manager – South Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, said, “Frozen Planet is one of those captivating series which will showcase the splendour of the most intriguing and extreme places on our planet – the polar region. Viewers will be inspired by the breathtaking landscapes and will realise the efforts that go behind capturing such amazing moments.”

Frozen Planet will take its viewers through the most breathtaking polar landscape, which most humans will never get to experience. This landmark series brings to the screen the frozen habitat of the polar region for what could be the last time before global warming changesthem forever.

Frozen Planet promises to enthrall viewers with spectacles that few of us will ever witness. The series will take viewers on a magical ride from deep under the frozen seas to a world of erupting polar volcanoes. It will travel to the South Pole across the Antarctic icecap – the largest concentration of ice on our planet. The programme retraces the steps of how life evolved under trying circumstances and is surviving against all odds.

Frozen Planet's Notable Facts and Figures:

  • Antarctic ice-cap, which contains 75% of the world's freshwater and is the largest concentration of ice on the planet
  • 75% of the world's fresh water is held in the polar ice caps. If they were to melt, global sea levels would rise by 80 metres. London, New York, Tokyo, Rio and most of the world's other major cities would all be underwater.
  • To achieve unique aerial images, Frozen Planet used a bespoke winterized gyro stabilized camera, the Cineflex, which is able to endure temperatures as low as -30°C.
  • Antarctica has the strongest winds on the planet – Katabatic winds blow out from the interior of Antarctica's frozen ice cap. The maximum wind speed ever measured was just under 200 mph (320 kmph) and coldest temperature ever officially recorded in Antarctica is -89°C!
  • 2365 days in the field and 134 hours underwater beneath the ice, Frozen Planet spent time with over 10 million polar animals and filmed in every Arctic nation.
  • Lowest temperature experienced by production crew: -50°C
  • Number of hours trapped in blizzards: 840
  • Days stuck on an icebreaker...trapped in ice: 10
  • Seconds in a 3.6 x 3.6 meter hut with a hungry polar bear: 5
  • Longest time a film crew has ever spent embedded inside an Adelie penguin colony: 5 months
  • Number of polar animals encountered during the course of production: 10 million

The Arctic and Antarctic remain the greatest wildernesses on Earth. Frozen Planet uses incredible aerial photography, cold-water diving and the storytelling of characters such as the wandering albatross, Adelie penguin and polar bear in order to capture a portrait of the polar regions that will take your breath away. This 'making of' programme follows the daring film crews as they brave the elements and reveals how this epic show is brought to life.
