Editorial head and News Director of TV Today, Qamar Waheed Naqvi, who is credited with having coming up with the name 'Aaj Tak' during his first stint with the organisation when the news programme used to be telecast on DD Metro in the 90s, is retiring on May 31, 2012. In his second stint, Naqvi spent close to nine years with TV Today.
When contacted, Naqvi insisted that he has no plans of taking up any other assignment as of now, contrary to market speculation.
Naqvi was one of the top editorial brains at Aaj Tak when it was a 20-minutes news bulletin on DD Metro but he left the organisation before Aaj Tak turned into 24-hour news channel. He returned to Aaj Tak as News Director in 2003 when Uday Shankar, then News Director, TV Today, moved on to launch Star News.
It is understood that TV Today has not found any replacement for Naqvi and hence the editorial/output heads of all the four channels of TV Today will directly report to Kalli Purie/Aroon Purie. However, it is not clear if this is a temporary arrangement until the appointment of a new News Director.
