Veteran journalist, columnist and author MJ Akbar has put in his papers at India Today after a two-year stint. His last day is October 31, 2012. MJ had joined India's No.1 English magazine as Editorial Director. He was also Editorial Director of the group's English news channel Headlines Today.

When contacted, MJ confirmed the news to BestMediaInfo.com. He said in a text response: “I am leaving on amicable terms and I enjoyed working with Aroon Purie for whom I have great respect.”

MJ had joined the India Today Group sometime in September/October 2010.

When asked, MJ did not categorically divulge his future plans. But he did say: “I have many lecture offers including an offer to teach for six weeks at the University of British Columbia.”

MJ debunked the speculation in the market that he could be taking up a leadership role at NewsX to whose owner, Vinod Sharma, he had sold a stake in his own newspaper, The Sunday Guardian, a few months ago. “I have only given a commitment to them to establish six editions of The Sunday Guardian and will do so,” he asserted.
