According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation data for July-December 2010, Sakal marches ahead of Lokmat.

Sakal has come out as the leading Marathi daily in Kolhapur according to the latest results declared by the Audit Bureau of Circulation, India. As per the latest July-December 2010 results, the Sakal, Kolhapur edition, has a circulation of 250047. In comparison, Lokmat has a circulation of 218499 and Pudhari figure has not been accepted, which are the two other major publications here. Kolhapur is one of the most prosperous belts in the state of Maharashtra with major industries like sugar, textile and manufacturing.
The rise of Sakal, however, is not much of a surprise. In the last year, the circulation has grown phenomenally; Sakal saw a 55% growth in circulation in this period. Also, Sakal took number of measures through editorials as well as through events to bring to light the local issues plaguing Kolhapur. It took up local issues like water shortages in Kolhapur and ensuring measures that led to declaration of new water supply system, a demand since independence. Sakal also led movements for social causes “Sakal Panchganga Bachav” movement for the revival of the Panchganga River which is a lifeline of Kolhapur district but has got heavily polluted. There have been numerous other steps by Sakal like tree plantation drives, columns dedicated to beautification of Rankala Lake etc.
Sakal is now leaders in two of the most important centers in Maharashtra. They are already the undisputed number 1 in Pune and coupled with the number 1 spot in Kolhapur, Sakal has cemented its claim as one of the strongest media vehicle in Maharashtra.
