The forum, comprising leading consultants and experts from the industry, will deliberate on issues related to the crisis in power-deficit India and provide suitable solutions to transform and sustain the industry.

The forum, on 'Competing Challenges for the Indian Power Generation Market', is being organised at The Oberoi, 6:30pm onwards, on May 4 (Wednesday).

A burgeoning population and a demand-and-supply imbalance — these are twin issues plaguing the power Sector in the country. Lack of infrastructure, stringent policy, administrative measures, affordability and accessibility of supply further make the situation grave for the industry.

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Uniyal, CEO, CNBC-TV18 and CNBC AWAAZ said, “Indian power generation utilities are faced with a threat to profitability, given the volatile nature of power tariffs and challenges of fuel availability. Considering that India is facing a serious power challenges, we are trying to explore whether the power generation sector has investor prospects, or not. This is with an aim to transform the industry into a sustainable power generator for the country.”

On the opportunities in the Indian market, Philippe Joubert, President, Alstom Power said, “The government is focused on improving infrastructure in the country and all the stakeholders need to come together to make this sustainable. All sources of energy need to be harnessed for sustaining the ever-increasing demand for power. The need of the hour is to adopt latest technologies that can serve to long-term demands. In the forum, eminent panelists such as Sudha Pillai, Member-Secretary of the Planning Commission; Arup Roy Choudhury, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC; Philippe Joubert, President, Alstom Power and H. D. Khunteta, CMD, Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. will discuss whether or not the impeding power crisis can be transformed into an investment opportunity.

The panel discussion will be anchored by Shereen Bhan, Executive Editor, CNBC-TV18.
