The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is on a search for a new chairperson since PD Vaghela’s tenure as Chairperson will come to an end on September 30, 2023.

Vaghela replaced RS Sharma as TRAI Chairperson in September 2020. Before TRAI, he was the secretary at the Department of Pharmaceuticals.

Under Vaghela’s dynamic leadership, the broadcast sector has witnessed various reforms including the amended new tariff order.

He has been credited with various reforms in the telecommunications sector including recommendations on auction and roll-out of 5G.

The chairperson has the power of general superintendence and directions in the conduct of the affairs of TRAI. The chairperson is given a salary of Rs 4.5 lakh per month. The tenure of the post is for a period of three years or until the person attains the age of 65 years, or until further order, whichever is earlier.

The appointment shall be made by the central government on the recommendation of the Search-cum Selection committee set up for this purpose.

Prior to joining the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Vaghela was commissioner of commercial tax in Gujarat. He is counted among the key officers who played a crucial role in the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017. He was the convenor of important central committees on GST and shuttled between Gujarat and Delhi to attend various meetings before the implementation of the single tax regime.
