GEC Watch: Star Plus performs better even as IPL hits GECs

Star Plus pushed out Sony Pal from the top spot in U+R, while Colors and Zee TV also lost significant viewership. The channel has three of its shows in the top five list of rural market

In BARC Impressions for Week 14 of 2017 (April 1 to 7), the Hindi GEC space witnessed significant changes with Star Plus launching its afternoon primetime and the Indian Premier League attracting a lot of GEC viewers. While the overall Impressions have fallen across the genre, Star Plus has been able to minimise its fall.

 

Star Plus reclaimed its top spot in the U+R markets and increased its numbers in Urban. Sony Pal held the No. 2 spot, while Colors and Zee TV lost significant viewership. Sony Pal has three of its shows in the top five shows in rural markets – Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, CID and Balveer being the top three shows.

 

Top channels in U+R markets

As per select BARC India data for Week 14 of 2017 for HSM (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals, Star Plus came back to the No. 1 position after a gap of one week, garnering 691.210 million Impressions. Sony Pal, slipped to No. 2 but is still performing well, clocking 603.379 million Impressions. At No. 3,Colors has lost significant viewership at 588.225 million Impressions. Rishtey, the sibling FTA GEC of Colors, was at No. 4 with 496.235 million Impressions. Zee TV too has lost significant numbers to stand at No. 5 with 481.772 million Impressions. Star Utsav climbed up to stand at No. 6 by clocking 430.182 million Impressions. Zee Anmol is at No. 7 with 424.007 million Impressions. At No. 8, Sony Entertainment Television stayed put with 414.068 million Impressions, while Sony SAB garnered marginally lesser numbers (414.057 million Impressions). Life OK was at No. 10 with 336.568 million Impressions.

 

Top programmes in U+R markets

As per select data {HSM (urban+rural): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 2+ Individuals}, Colors’ Naagin – Season 2 stayed on top with 11.363 million Impressions. Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya too remained at No. 2 with 10.168 million Impressions. Star Plus’ Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai at No. 3 garnered 9.440 million Impressions. Colors’ Shani stood at No. 4 with 7.754 million Impressions. Zee TV’s singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs slipped to No. 4 with 7.470 million Impressions.

 

Top channels in Urban markets

Star Plus retains its lead in urban markets with 475.108 million Impressions. At No. 2, Colors garnered 400.277 million Impressions. Zee TV stood at No. 3 with 288.031 million Impressions while Sony Entertainment Television stood at No. 4 with 279.669 million Impressions. Sony SAB is at No. 5 with 276.347 million Impressions. Life OK stood at No. 6 with 215.528 million Impressions followed by Sony Pal which garnered 148.874 million Impressions. At No. 8, &TV garnered 128.515 million Impressions. Rishtey stood at No. 9 with 123.732 million Impressions and Star Utsav stood at No. 10 with 101.711 million Impressions.

 

Top programmes in Urban markets

As per select data {HSM (urban): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hours): 2+ Individuals}, Colors’ Naagin- Season 2 led the top programmes list with 7.127 million Impressions. Star Plus’ Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai stood at No. 2 with 6.635 million Impressions. Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya stood at No. 3 with 6.194 million Impressions. At No. 4, Colors’ Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki garnered 5.480 million Impressions. Sony SAB’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah stood at No. 5 with 5.158 million Impressions.

 

Top channels in Rural markets

Sony Pal continued to lead the rural markets garnering 454.505 million Impressions. Rishtey took second position with 372.502 million Impressions. Zee Anmol slipped to No. 3 with 328.752 million Impressions. Star Utsav stood at No. 4 with 328.471 million Impressions. Star Plus stood at No. 5 with 216.102 million Impressions. Zee TV stood at No. 6 with 193.741 million Impressions while Colors followed with 187.947 million Impressions. At No. 8, Big Magic garnered 155.578 million Impressions while Sony SAB followed with 137.709 million Impressions. Sony Entertainment Television trailed at No. 10 with 134.398 million Impressions.

 

Top programmes in Rural markets

Sony Pal’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah topped the rural programmes chart as it garnered 5.350 million Impressions. The channel’s CID stood at No. 2 with 5.320 million Impressions and the channel’s Baalveer took the third spot with 5.232 million Impressions. Rishtey’s Naagin – Season 2 followed with 5.187 million Impression’s while Colors Naagin – Season 2 was at No. 5 with 4.236 million Impressions.​
