ibf-bcccFilm actress Ms Sharmila Tagore, theatre activist Ms Arundhati Nag and film studies academician Ira Bhaskar will join as new members of the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), the independent self-regulator for non-news general entertainment channels set up by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), from its 59th meeting to be held in September 2016.

The Board of Directors of IBF, under the presidentship of Uday Shankar (Chairman & CEO, STAR India), has approved their appointment for a term of three years in the eminent persons' category in place of Bhaskar Ghose, Shabana Azmi and Vir Sanghvi, whose tenures at BCCC drew to a close recently.

The three members, associated with BCCC since its inception in 2011, were given a warm send-off at the Council's 58th meeting held on Friday, August 26, 2016, under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Mukul Mudgal, who expressed gratitude to them for their efforts to make BCCC a credible and robust self-regulatory body.

In his farewell message, Ghose said, “We initially felt our way towards what is now a clear policy regarding content-related complaints against entertainment channels. In every meeting there was unanimity among members on every decision. In our interactions with channel heads, producers, script writers and others, we were able to share our views and problems frankly and in a very cordial manner. BCCC has evolved as an understanding yet firm body upholding the interests and concerns of viewers while protecting the freedom of expression of creative persons.”

Recalling her stint at BCCC, Azmi said, “It has been a pleasure to serve BCCC since its inception. I have grown and learned from my colleagues. Our attempt has been not to censor but to self-regulate. The fact that we have met with cent percent compliance indicates that self-regulation is possible.”

Sanghvi said, “It was an honour to be part of the founding Council because we created the precedents and set the tone for the future.”
