BBC-ComUK's decision to leave the European Union (EU) sent people the world over into a tizzy. People sought out news websites to educate themselves about the referendum and the implication of a 'Brexit'. Indians seeking the latest on the UK's vote helped BBC.com reach a record-breaking spike in traffic. On June 24, the day the historic result became clear, BBC's international news services were in demand as people around the world sought to understand what the next steps were and what it could mean for them.

Globally BBC.com attracted more than 21 million unique browsers and 114 million page views on the day of the result alone. In India, unique browsers increased by 170% with page views going up by 324% when compared to the average daily amount in May 2016. Page views per browser stood at 3.9 on the day of the result which was 56% more compared to the average daily figure in May 2016.

The numbers remained high even after the initial interest around the result had died down. Even after 72 hours, the daily average of unique browsers and page views was still 44% and 43% more respectively than the average daily traffic for May in India.
