Is Zee TV's Vishkanya an answer to Colors' Naagin?

It has time and again been observed that the formats and sub-genres on the Hindi GECs have worked in a cyclic manner. So, when a sitcom hits the screens and get eyeballs, one can observe many others being launched. Similarly, the mythology, stand-up comedy and horror genres have seen a follow-up pattern on the Hindi GECs. Now, it looks like, it is the turn for 'snake-based supernatural concepts' to take on the television screens and attract audiences.

After the overwhelming success of the finite series from Colors, based on the supernatural snake character Naagin, Zee TV has attempted another show based on the snake poison. The new show is called Vishkanya (meaning snake woman or poison woman). The concept of the show is how a girl with supernatural poisonous powers is concealed in her house by her mother, only to use these powers to her own vested interests.

Through this show, the channel is attempting at improving their early prime time slot at 6.30 PM. The slot was earlier occupied by a heavily female centric fiction show Sarojini which will be pushed to the 6 PM slot. The 6 PM slot will be vacated by ending Satrangi Sasural. These changes will be effective from March 28 when Vishkanya will be aired from Monday to Saturday at 6.30 PM.

Naagin, another show based on the supernatural snake character, is a finite fiction series launched by Colors on November 1, produced and directed by Ekta Kapoor. The show has been an instant hit with the audience, continuing to be on the top slot in the Hindi GEC genre for a very long time. Hence, it looks like the channel was prompted to join the genre in an expectation of tasting similar success.

Conceptualised by Vivek Bahl and produced by Nissar Parvez and Alind Srivastava of Peninsula Pictures, the love story in Vishkanya begins to unravel when their ultra-wealthy Marwari neighbours' son Malay falls for the protagonist. The lead character, Aparajita Appu, is so attractive that Malay falls for her immediately.

Debutante Aishwarya Khare will be seen playing the role of the protagonist Appu, while actor Vin Rana will play the character of Malay Mittal. Former model and actress Rohini Banerjee will make a comeback to television in the role of the ultra-protective yet enigmatic Kalpana, mother to Appu, and veteran actress Kashish Duggal will play the role of Nandita Mittal, Malay's mother.

Zee TV Business Head Pradeep Hejmadi said, “Vishkanya is a part of our constant endeavour of presenting audiences with different flavours of entertainment. Zee TV has consistently led the weekday 8 to 10:30 PM band across GECs, and by introducing this novel, differentiated concept at 6:30 PM, we aim to further fortify our early primetime band. A unique, modern-day fairytale romance set against the backdrop of a revenge thriller, Vishkanya has elements of mystique, intrigue and drama needed to excite the viewers.”

Other than these shows completely revolving about the supernatural concepts, the supernatural phenomenon has entered many other shows' storylines. Be it Sasural Simar Ka, Swaragini, Hamaari Adhuri Kahaani and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.
