National English daily Hindustan Times held the third edition of the HT Scholarship Programme, an industry first platform which rewards young minds, on Friday, February 8, in Mumbai.

The scholarship programme is a translation of HT's belief that education is not merely one of the cornerstones of our society; it is the most important thing that will define children's future. Hindustan Times has consistently and constructively engaged with education through a number of endeavours such as Campus Calling, Mission MBA, Top Schools and more.

This year, the programme saw an unprecedented response, and engaged with 280 schools in Mumbai and received applications from 57,000 students from Std V to Std IX. From the applications, 150 students were shortlisted based on all-round assessment of academics, extra-curricular activities, community service and an essay. The topic of the essay was “What would you do in a world without TV, the Internet and mobile phones”. The final 50 winners (10 students from each standard) were chosen after an interview round with senior HT editors. The 50 winners have received Rs 50,000 each to further their education.

The event continued with some special guests – actress Kajol and boxer Vijender Singh – and concluded with the 50 winners being presented certificates of achievement as their classmates, parents and teachers cheered them on.

Rajesh Ramakrishnanan, Head – Marketing, Hindustan Times, said, “Hindustan Times has always attempted to go beyond being only a newspaper and our objective through this initiative is to drive positive change in society. Schools today motivate children to read newspapers and we attempt to go beyond that as it truly helps them to identify and recognise their potential. The initiative was marketed via print, and supported by digital and radio.”
