publive-imageFE-EVI Green Business Leadership Awards 2011-12 was given away by Union Minster for Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily at a glittering award ceremony in the capital on June 6. The event was organized jointly by The Financial Express and Emergent Ventures India.

The awards, presented to a cross section of industry sectors, included Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Shree Cement Ltd, Tata Chemicals, Tata Coffee Ltd, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Essar Steel, Larsen & Toubro and Jain Irrigation System as winners in their respective categories.

Other notable companies who were nominated include Suzuki India Ltd, Ashok Leyland Ltd, Citibank India, ICICI Bank Ltd, JK Lakshmi Cement Ltd, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Ltd, Dabur India Ltd, L'Oreal India Pvt Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd, Aventis Pharma, Cipla Ltd, Suzlon Energy Ltd, IL&FS Engineering and Construction Company Ltd, JSW Ispat Steel Ltd, Hero Cycles Ltd, Sterlite Technologies Ltd, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd, JK Tyre & Industries Ltd, Essar Shipping Ltd, Vodafone India Ltd., among others.

The Jury also identified two companies for their unique work in promoting sustainability initiatives within their organizations. They were awarded a certificate of recognition for their distinctive initiatives. The companies were IndusInd Bank and Essar Shipping.

The winners, were shortlisted and selected from nearly 600 companies, each with a revenue of Rs 1,000 crore, on the basis of the impact their initiatives have made in areas like climate change & environment, natural resources management, and governance for sustainability. Weightage was also given to their performance in areas like energy use, water use, stakeholder engagement, disclosure and corporate governance.

The awards jury comprised eminent policymakers, industry leaders, academicians and thought leaders like Dr P C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), V. Subramanian, Sec. Gen & CEO of Indian Wind Energy Association, K. Subramanya, Former CEO, Tata BP Solar, Vinod Kala, Founder & MD, Emergent Ventures and Subhomoy Bhattacharjee, Deputy Editor, The Indian Express.

Two more companies – Cleantec Limited and Greenlight Planet – were given special recognition for their innovative initiatives in the area of sustainability.

The award ceremony was accompanied by the launch of the FE-EVI Green Business Survey 2011-12. The FE-EVI Green Business Survey helps Indian businesses that are fighting climate change and undertaking sustainability initiatives by benchmarking, measuring progress and tracking the industry outlook. The survey details the sector-wise outlook of companies on climate change and sustainability issues.

"What the UN is trying to achieve at a global, inter-governmental level is something FE-EVI survey has been trying to do in its own modest way?to get companies to start reporting regularly on sustainability measures which are becoming integral to their businesses,” Venu added.
