Galli Galli Sim Sim, the beloved children's program, announced the winners of the MetLife Foundation supported Galli Galli Sim Sim radio show contest.  The Galli Galli Sim Sim radio is broadcast on All India Radio across Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jabalpur, Jamshedpur, Srinagar, Jammu, Jallandhar, Bilaspur, Raigarh, Alwar and Hazaribagh. The radio show had a contest where children who took part got a chance to come to New Delhi and meet with their favourite muppets from Galli Galli Sim Sim - Chamki and Grover.

In a fun filled event, Chamki and Grover taught their young listeners tricks and games from the radio show and the children got to make their own Galli Galli Sim Sim muppets as well!

Galli Galli Sim Sim has been working with the MetLife Foundation since 2010 to raise awareness on healthy habits for young children. As is well known, there is a critical need to foster healthy habits in young children in India. A large cross section of the population lacks basic healthcare and about 2.1 million child deaths occur every year, the highest number within a single country worldwide. Infact,

  • About 1.8 million child deaths occur each year in India accounting for half of all child deaths in Asia and one in five worldwide.
  • Almost 40% of Indian children suffer from malnutrition, which adversely affects physical and cognitive growth and increases susceptibility to infections.
  • Infections are caused and exacerbated by poor hygiene and sanitation.

Ultimately, poor health makes it difficult or impossible for children to access formal and informal educational services.  Early childhood is a best age to help children form habits and tastes that last a lifetime, providing a window of opportunity to promote positive behaviors that could last well into adulthood.  With over 125 million preschool-age children in India, it is imperative to foster good nutrition and health habits in the early years, which will lead to lifelong healthy behaviors.

Realizing this Galli Galli Sim Sim and MetLife Foundation have been working on the Galli Galli Sim Sim Healthy Habits for Life campaign since 2010 – using various media and platforms to reach the message of Healthy Habits to children across India.

The first phase of this association in 2010 consisted of MetLife Foundation having sponsored a Healthy Habits for Life campaign on Cartoon Network and Pogo along with educational outreach activities in Jaipur. In the 2nd phase in 2011, MetLife Foundation helped take the Galli Galli Sim Sim initiative beyond television to radio, especially for those areas and populations with less access to C&S television. So along with continued broadcast of the Galli Galli Sim Sim Healthy Habits for Life campaign on Cartoon Network and Pogo, the Galli Galli Sim Sim Healthy Habits for Life radio show was produced and is being broadcast across 11 cities on All India Radio, Primary and Vividh Bharathi channels. The cities are Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jabalpur, Jamshedpur, Srinagar, Jammu, Jallandhar, Bilaspur, Raigarh, Alwar and Hazaribagh. To encourage children to listen & to ensure that the educational message was received a contest was run on the radio show, where by 11 children from different cities got a chance to meet the radio show muppets – Chamki and Grover.

The winners were; Sagar, 10, Dehradun; Anjali Yadav, 11, Kanpur; Preetha Arya, 6 Jaipur; Mahika Mathur, 7, Gwalior; Mimansa, 9, Darbangha; Malhar, 12, Ahmedabad; Usman Mir, 10, Jammu; Diksha, 10, Hoshangabad; Arthav, 12, Indore; Sahi Nur Ahmed, 9, Guwahati and Gurmandeep Singh, 12, Amritsar.

Sashwati Banerjee, Executive Director of Galli Galli Sim Sim says, “The response for the Galli Galli Sim Sim's Radio Show has been phenomenal, no doubt children from all across India love Chamki and Grover!.Apart, of the same we're glad to know that such a vast section does follow the initiative ensuring inculcation of the educational message that we've always tried to deliver through this initiative. Perhaps, that could be the reason that why we're all here today with some of those prominent kids who have followed the contest and turned to be the winner today not only for the contest, but for their near future, too.”
