This has been announced in an internal mail put out by Chairman and Editorial Director of Business Standard Limited, TN Ninan. The appointment will become effective from November 1, 2011, it is learnt.

The elevation of AKB, as Bhattacharya is popularly known, follows the resignation of Sanjaya Baru as Editor of BS. AKB is well-known as a columnist and writer on policy issues. He has also worked for The Economic Times as Chief of Bureau in the late 80 and early 90s when it was edited by Ninan.

It is learnt that Baru is joining London and Geneva based International Institute of Strategic Studies as Director, Geo-economics and Strategy; however, he will be based out of New Delhi.

Baru, who left Financial Express as its Chief Editor to become the Press Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during UPA-1, joined Business Standard as Editor in January 2010 after Ninan stepped down from the post. Prior to that, he was in Singapore on a teaching assignment with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

He has also worked with The Economic Times (1990-1994) and The Times of India (1994-1997). A former academician, Baru has worked with the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, at Jawaharlal Nehru University and the School of Economics and Development Studies, University of East Anglia, UK.
