publive-imageMaharashtra's  No.1 newspaper Lokmat recently held a mega sports and cultural  extravaganza, 'Lokmat Maharashtra Grameen Khel' to celebrate the rich sports and traditions of rural Maharashtra.

Held on 23rd & 24th April 2011 at Khultabad near Aurangabad, the event involved competitions in 8 games like Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Wrestling, Volleyball, Arm Wrestling, Tug of War, Throwball and Malkhamb, testing skill, power and endurance of the participants.

In an unique attempt, the first of its kind in Maharashtra, sportsmen around Aurangabad and other districts of Maharashtra got an opportunity to compete and showcase their talent and skills in front of a large audience who had come from far and wide to cheer them. The event drew a positive response with several villages around Aurangabad and rest of Maharashtra registering for the competitions. Various sport associations of the 8 games came forward too and registered their individual teams.

A 360 promotion plan was executed around a core idea “Aahe Dum”. This core them was then taken around in Print Ads, Television commercial , an SMS shot and Radio activity.

Also a special promotion was held a week in advance at the Grounds coinciding with Hanuman Jayanti and we used this opportunity to build awareness of the Games  wherein an exhibition match of Kusti was played and viewed by lakhs of devotees who had come to visit the adjacent Bhadra Maruti temple. This pre-event created quite a buzz and drew audiences for the main event.

For sponsors it was an unique opportunity to reach out to rural audiences. Managed by the Connect Events team the event attracted audiences from far and wide. Having Atul Parchure, a famous Marathi actor as the Chief Guest was an added attraction. Performances from local lavani artistes also added a zing to the games.

The closing ceremony saw the distribution of prizes to deserved players, most of them were emotional as they were playing for the first time on such a stage. According to Mr. Bharat Kapadia, President of Lokmat Media Ltd.”one should have seen to believe the enthusiasm the participants showed and the cheers 25,000 people gave. There could not have been a better day for the winners to get the recognition than on the birthday of Sachin Tendulkar. This property should immense potential to grow and will be scalable in the next year”

The Games will be aired on the Marathi News channel, IBN Lokmat on May1, Sunday morning and repeat in the evening.
