publive-imageAfter a TV channel for the Lok Sabha which is already in operation, Rajya Sabha proceedings will be aired by a separate channel from November 7. Gurdeep Singh Sappal, OSD to Vice President Hamid Ansari, is understood to have been appointed as the CEO of the soon-to-be-launched Rajya Sabha TV.

The new channel, an initiative of Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, is being launched to coincide with the commencement of the winter session of Parliament.

The Lok Sabha TV started four years ago when Somnath Chatterjee was the Speaker.

Former Rajya Sabha Secretary General V K Agnihotri had said earlier that the estimated cost of the project was around Rs 25 crore. An Advisory Committee would advise the Chairman on the running of the new channel.

The Rajya Sabha TV and the Lok Sabha TV would be complementing each other by sharing content.

At present, Doordarshan Rajya Sabha airs the proceedings of the Upper House. The Lok Sabha TV and Doordarshan Rajya Sabha are 'must carry' channels for cable as well as DTH operators.

Lok Sabha TV (LSTV), a 24-hour TV channel broadcasting in Hindi and English, came into being in 2006 replacing the DD Lok Sabha channel. Earlier in 2004, with efforts of the Lok Sabha and Prasar Bharati, two dedicated satellite channels were set up to telecast live the proceedings of both Houses of Parliament.

The LSTV is owned and operated entirely by Lok Sabha broadcasting live the proceedings of the Lok Sabha and also various cultural and educational programmes and panel discussions when the House is not in session.
