Delhi: Elon Musk's Tesla has initiated a lawsuit against an Indian battery manufacturer, Tesla Power India, for trademark infringement.

The case, which is being heard in the Delhi High Court, revolves around the Indian company's use of the name "Tesla Power" to market its lead acid batteries. Tesla is seeking damages and a permanent injunction to halt the use of its brand name.

The conflict escalated when it was disclosed in court this week that Tesla Power India continued using the "Tesla Power" brand even after receiving a cease-and-desist notice in April 2022. The Indian company argues that there is no overlap in their market, as they do not produce electric vehicles, and claims there was no intention to confuse consumers.

During the recent court session, the judge allowed Tesla Power India three weeks to file a written response, following their submission of documents defending their stance. The company, which also markets itself as "Tesla Power USA," is noted for its role in providing affordable batteries in India.

Tesla informed the court that it became aware of the unauthorised use of its brand name in 2022, which led to the ongoing legal proceedings.

The next court hearing is scheduled for May 22, as Tesla seeks to protect its brand identity in India.
